The Children of Vukarhani

Julio is the youngest 'Vukie'-- about

4 years old. After his dad died, his unstable crippled mother moved Julio from place to place. His mother gave him up and Pastor Nondo bought Julio to Vukarhani. Julio suffered from severe malnutrition and some thought he would not live. Gerald and Agatha cared for him, including having him sleep with them, and now he is healthy. No one fills a lap quite like Julio.

Julianna is about 5 years old. After her mother passed away, her alcoholic father took her from place to place. Eventually, the authorities took her to foster parents. Her foster father had Julianna watch the neighborhood goats and took whatever pay she was given to purchase alcohol. Gerald received permission from the neighbors and the authorities to bring her to Vukarhani. At Vukarhani, Julianna sparkles. She is princess of the 'high five.'

Timothy has the moves of a professional dancer. Timothy and his sister Ageeda lived with a neighbor after their parents died. When the neighbor became ill the children were given temporary care by Nuns. In time the Nuns returned Ageeda and Timothy to the

village, and they wandered from hut to hut until Gerald was able to bring them to Vukarhani. Timothy does well in school and

is learning Portuguese.
